Japanese police say they have managed to return the bulk of the $US65 million found in the wake of the March tsunami.

Most of the cash was discovered in wallets and safes.

Japan's National Police Agency says 5,700 safes were found after the tsunami, containing a total of $29 million.

It says 95 per cent of that money has now been returned to its owners, including one company which lost a safe containing more than $1 million.

Police have also managed to return the bulk of the $46 million in cash found in wallets, purses and in bundles spread throughout the tsunami zone.

Most of the owners were tracked down using credit cards and ID cards retrieved from purses and wallets.
