PNG islanders plead for help as homes sink

The transfer of climate refugees from Papua New Guinea's Carteret Islands is happening too slowly, according to the islanders.

A relocation process to Bougainville began several years ago, but so far only two families out of a population of 2,300 have been able to move.

Relocated islanders have appealed to the PNG government and the international community for help, to get friends and families off the Cartarets.

They say rising sea water is inundating food gardens and crops, causing food shortages.

Experts predict the islands could be uninhabitable by 2015.

Charles Tsivi says he's worried about the fate of relatives back home, but can't afford a boat to visit them.

"I'm very sorry. Our mothers are there with the food shortage, we are worried about them, but to help them it's hard to go across the sea. We could help them if we had boats."
